Cow's Cradle
"A friend tells me that like most young farm wives she went to the barn for milking, even with a small baby to tend.  But she had her own unique way of handling the situation.  They were fortunate to have an old fashioned cradle that she took down to the barn.  The baby was placed in the cradle, with one end of a rope tied to the cradle and the other and of the rope tied to a cow’s tail.  And as the cow switched her tail, the cradle was rocked.  And the cow was milked."
